In 2001, I flew from Boston to Los Angeles on United Airlines 175, the same flight that, one week later, would demolish the second Twin Tower on September 11. Before this trip to the USA, I had organized the Conference Women in the Azores and the Immigrant Communities at the University of the Azores. In 2021, these two events seemed to converge, once again. As the world lamented the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the Azorean Emigrants Association celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 2001 Conference, and I realized that the time had come to make available online the six books that resulted from the Conference, which have long been out of print. I also thought of the requests I receive from persons wanting to acquire the books and learn about what they contain.

Then, looking back, I felt that this Website should also include the work I have developed over time. This material is organized into four major areas: 1) Gender Issues; 2) Literature, Language and Translation; 3) Azores: Nature and Culture; and 4) Environment and Generations. Related to these, a fifth area contains a variety of information – photos and videos, articles and recollections, interviews and news reports – about my personal and professional life, about my world, shaped by two languages and cultures.
